WHAT IS A WOOD SHREDDER?

A wood shredder or wood chipper (also called a chopper or chopper) is a mechanical device for shredding residual wood. Wood shredders are used to shred bulky, large-volume wood waste and reduce its volume.

In a wood chipper, powerful electric or combustion engines or tractors are used that drive knife systems or grinders. If an object is put into the wood shredder, it is broken down by rubbing, grinding, tearing,
Smash or cut into small pieces. The result is called shredded material, wood chips or wood chips.

Wood clippings from trees, bushes, hedge cuttings and other bulky garden waste are shredded into small, quickly compostable pieces by the garden shredder or wood chipper. Chopped branches, tree bark and twigs are often used to cover flower beds in winter as frost protection or so that weeds grow more slowly. The less green material the material has, the better it is suitable for it.

WHICH WOOD SHREDDER DO YOU NEED?

Garden shredders are available in different designs and performance levels, which are used depending on the type and amount of clippings. They are mostly driven by electric motors or petrol engines (for mobile use), only large devices are powered by tractors with a connection to the PTO shaft. In principle, there is no limit to the branch diameter. The thicker the clippings, the more powerful the motors have to be.

Allotment garden shredders are designed for branches up to 4.5 cm thick. Victory garden shredders can, however, also replace large wood shredders, because they can quickly process wood diameters of up to 10 cm with their powerful petrol engines.

WOOD SHREDDER WITH INFEED ROLLER AND HIGH EFFECT

For professional use, wood shredders and wood chippers are often called bush chippers, whose hydraulically driven feed rollers can automatically pull in the clippings and are equipped with an emergency shut-off bar.

Wood chippers with more powerful drives usually have a high ejection, in which the chopped material is thrown away in a high arc so that it can, for example, fall directly onto a trailer or be distributed on a bed.

In the case of small garden shredders, the shredded material usually falls down or into a container, so that it often has to be emptied, because a backlog of the shredded material can cause blockages.

Blockages or blockages can either be removed by changing the direction of rotation - this only works with a wood shredder with hydraulic feed rollers, or, more laboriously, by opening the housing. The stronger the air suction that the rotating cutterhead or disc generates in the wood shredder, the fewer blockages can form in the wood chipper.

Litter and damp waste can more easily cause blockages in the discharge opening. Therefore, firs or thuja branches should be stored for 2 or 3 weeks after cutting so that most of the moisture can escape.

"Second generation" garden shredders have a high filler neck with an attached funnel, so that refilling cannot lead to contact of the hands with the knives.

Wood shredders with active intake have a correspondingly longer intake funnel. Modern professional wood shredders with self-feed, such as the Victory BX-72 or BX-102, have emergency shut-off bars that switch off the drive and block the cutting unit as soon as pressure is exerted on the hopper edge. The dangers that need to be prevented in models with self-closing are mostly that bulky branches, thorns or spikes can get caught on work gloves or items of clothing and then exert a surprisingly fast pull in the direction of the cutting unit.

Wood shredders like the Victory BX-52 do not have an active feed mechanism, but the branch material is cut off between 36 and 66 times per second, depending on the PTO speed. This enormously high cutting speed creates a pull-in force that pulls in most of the branches powerfully. Only larger branch forks require additional pressure from the operator.

If you buy a Victory gasoline-powered garden shredder, a rotary cutter will be used. This draws the branches in automatically and cuts itself off at a counter-blade. During the self-collection, more waste can be collected and fed to the chopper, so less time is required for refilling.
